Two-day communication conference kicks off

KATHMANDU, May 14: A two-day long communication conference, organized with a view to strengthening Nepal-India relationship, has begun in the Capital from Saturday.



Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Bharat Mohan Adhikari inaugurated the conference in which Nepali and Indian journalists are participating.[break]



On the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Adhikari said the government is determined to provide full sense of press freedom.



Adhikari said Nepali Congress and Madhes based parties´ support is the most to conclude the peace process and promulgate new constitution. He urged them to forge political consensus and join the government.



"There is no alternative to institutional development of the achievements received through democratic movements in the past," he said.



He discussed media persons´ role to take Nepal- India cordial relationship to the height. He added that Indian support is always necessary to the nation´s social and economic prosperity.



Speaking at the program, Minister for Information and Communication Agni Sapkota said press freedom was the mother of all rights. He said the current government is committed to conclude the ´mission´ for peace and constitution.



He said people´s confidence over the lawmakers will not be ended when they become ready for self-criticism over the weaknesses seen during the constitution writing process. He added that constitution writing and management of the Maoist combatants should be taken together.



Minister Sapkota said the government and the parties have been making tireless efforts to bring the draft for new constitution within the May 28.



Nepali Congress leader Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat discussed on importance of press freedom and said in the absence of it national development could not be predicted.



Unified CPN (Maoist) spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma appreciated the media workers´ role for the peace and constitution.



Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood called Nepal-India relationship the unique one and said India has been providing development-journalism training to Nepali journalists every year as an effort to encourage the whole press sector.



Editors´ Society Nepal and BP Koirala India-Nepal Foundation jointly organized the conference.



Society´s chairman Devendra Gautam chaired the inaugural function and society´s member duo Kailash Pradhan and Ramesh Tuphan put their views on the occasion.
