KATHMANDU, March 21: In a bid to send a strong message on action for climate change, Carlsberg has urged everyone to participate in Earth Hour 2013 by switching off the lights from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday.

Gorkha Brewery, part of the Carlsberg Group, has been participating in Earth Hour making Nepal of the 135 participating countries in the world since 2011.[break]

"The Carlsberg Group has a long tradition of caring for the environment and Earth Hour is an excellent opportunity to participate in sending a strong message for action on energy saving and climate change,” said Philip Norley, the managing director of Gorkha Brewery.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million people agreed to switch off their non-essential lights in their homes and businesses for an hour.

The Earth Hour event is a worldwide initiative, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), encouraging both households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for an hour in order to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change, Gorkha Brewery said in a statement Thursday.
