RAJBIRAJ, July 18:Overnight incessant downpour has flooded vast swathes of Saptari district, including the district headquarters, Rajbiraj.

At Rajbiraj, which lacks a proper drainage system, water gushed into over a hundred houses, including half a dozen government offices on Tuesday. Wards 5, 7, 8 and 10 of the municipality remain waterlogged.

According to the locals, around half a dozen houses in the area have been partially damanged following the torrential downpour.

"The downpour that started at around midnight has played havoc with our lives," said Jaggu Ram, of Rajbiraj-8. "We have no place to take a shelter and cook our meal as our house has been inundated following the flash flood." He said that the 3 feet of water has been collected on the ground floor of his house.

According to police, the Municipality office, District Administration Office, the Office of Cottage and Small Industries, Sagarmata Zonal Hospital and Raj Stadium have also affected by the flash flood.

During the monsoons, Rajbiraj face water induced disasters due to the lack of proper drainage system, which has been compounded over the recent years by unmanaged urbanization, beside the flooding of the Bhalubhau River that flows through the town.

Incessant rainfall has also affected many villages in Saptari. The rain-swollen Khado, Sundari, Mahuli, Pauda Rivers have disrupted lives across the district. Water Induced Disaster Management Committee informed that over a dozen villages are at a high risk. Portaha, Barmajhiya, Mainakaderi, Madhavpur, Trikol and a few more Village development Committees in the north-eastern part of the district have been flooded, informed Area Police Office at Bhardaha.

The locals of Tilathi blamed the government authorities for making a substandard embankment on Khado River which was swept way by the flood, triggering inundation.

The Rajbiraj-Kunauli road section has been blocked for a month after the raging Khando River swept away a 500-meter stretch of the road.
