BIRGUNJ, Sept 15: Three people were killed on Monday night when a tipper ran over them in Karmeya-1 of Sarlahi. Sonelal Sahani, 40, of Paurahi-3, Toin Sahani, 50, of Gairiguthi-5 and Raman Sahani, 30, also of Gairiguthi-5 were killed in the incident, the police said.
The tipper (Na 1 Cha 2411), which had been traveling along the east-west highway, ran over the three victims who were lying beside the road, killing them on the spot. All three were from the Malah community and earned their livelihood by fishing in the Bagmati River located at the border between Rautahat and Sarlahi.
The driver fled immediately after the incident took place, said the police. The dead bodies have been taken to the district hospital in Malangawa for postmortem.
Relatives of the deceased obstructed the highway from 6 a.m. Tuesday demanding compensation for the families of the victims.
According to Central-Regional Traffic Office, 366 people lost their lives in 766 road traffic accidents in 16 districts in the Central Development Region last year. Forty-five people were killed in road accidents, in the first month of the ongoing fiscal alone.
