NEPALGUNJ, Feb 7: Normal life was affected in some southwest districts because of a two-day general strikes (banda) called by Tharu Kalyankari Sabha, a Tharu rights group.

In the first day of banda called against the government decision to include indigenous Tharu community in Madhesi group, the Sabha activists in Kohalpur and Tulsipur of Dang, Bardiya and Nepalgunj have created obstructions in the roads. Roads wear completely deserted look. Eastern district of Siraha is also affected by the banda.

“There is no Madhes region in Nepal. There are Himal, Pahad (hills) and Tarai,” said Raj Kumar Lekhi, Sabha’s general secretary. “So we want the Tharu community to be included as the indigenous community of Tarai, not in the Madhesi group.”

Meanwhile, our Mahendranagar correspondent Bikram Giri reports that Tharu Kalyankari Sabha activists have vandalized over a dozen vehicles in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts for defying their banda call. They have disrupted vehicular movement by placing obstructions on the roads in the Mahendranagar-Chisapani section of the East-West Highway since early morning.
