Chokhyal, who had been suffering from liver and chest ailments, passed away at TU Teaching Hospital at Maharajgunj. NC leader NP Saud told Republica that Chokhyal had serious liver ailment.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. He hailed from Kailali district in the far-west region.
He was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat on Saturday. NC Acting President Sushil Koirala draped his body with the party flag. A large number of NC supporters had gathered at Aryaghat to pay him last tributes.
He served as a law minister and chief whip of the NC. When the NC split in the wake of the parliament´s dissolution in 2002, Chokhyal joined Sher Bahadur Deuba-led NC (Democratic).
Chokhyal joined politics in 42 years ago. He was jailed for nearly four years for fighting for democracy during teh Panchayat and former King Gyanendra´s regime.
Chokhyal, who was also a lawyer, was the NC candidate in the Constituent Assembly election from Kailali Constituency No 6. He was elected Member of Parliament in 2048 and 2056 BS from the same district.
