DANG, Jan 19: Children and the elderly of Syaulibang, Pyuthan, who have been compelled to live under the open sky after fire gutted the entire village over a week ago, are starting to fall sick.

District Health Office had sent a team to the village but they could not carry enough medicines to the village, which is 10-hour trek from the district headquarters. [break]

“Children are suffering from pneumonia due to excessive cold and most of the elderly have also fallen ill,” said assistant health worker (AHW) of Pyuthan District Hospital Dadhiram Subedi.

More than 500 people, including 67 under the age of five, are sleeping under makeshift tents. The villagers had gone to the local community forest in the morning to cut elephant grass when the fire broke out. When they returned their houses had been burnt to cinders.

Home Minister Bhim Rawal had visited the village two days later and announced a compensation of Rs 5,000 to each family. Various organizations and individuals have collected relief materials in district headquarters and the neighboring villages but they are yet to reach the victims.
