On Wednesday, the Baidya faction not only registered a note of dissent against the party´s office bearers´ decision to end dual security system, but also objected to the extension of the term of the sub committee under the Constitutional Committee of the Constituent Assembly. [break]
During the meeting of the subcommittee, Maoist leader Dev Gurung, who is close to Baidya, took strong exception to the decision to extend the term of the sub committee headed by party Chairman Dahal. He lobbied the Maoist CA members in the CC to speak against the extension.
Gurung was of the view that the political parties should instead be given the responsibility of resolving the disputes in constitution writing, saying that the subcommittee had failed to settle the disputes even after several term extensions.
“Its term was extended for 15 days twice, but the subcommittee could not meet for a month. Now there is no relevance of such a subcommittee,” Gurung told Republica.
Despite Gurung´s objection, the CC extended the term of the sub-committee.
The CC took a decision to this effect on Wednesday morning concluding that the extended three months of the CA would be insufficient if the first draft of the constitution is to be prepared only after settling the disputes.
According to CC chairman Nilambar Acharya, the CC has extended the subcommittee term for a maximum of two months on the condition that the latter submits its progress report every 10 days.
NC leader Bimalendra Nidhi said that the CC would hold meetings regularly to expedite the task of settling the disputes. The CC is scheduled to meet Thursday morning to discuss the disputed issues of state-restructuring.
