Starting from the two-day general shutdown called by Limbuwan Rajya Parishad followed by one-day general shutdown by the Nepali Congress to protest against the murder of its activist, the district has been affected by the indefinite strike called by the UCPN (Maoist) in all five districts in the east since Thursday. “If the strike continues for two more days, there will be crisis situation,” Santosh Khatiwada, the president of Taplegunj chapter of FNCCI, said.
Since vehicle movement has come to a standstill, there is now a shortage of rice, oil, salt, sugar, gas and others. It usually takes three days to transport food to Taplejung from Jhapa.
“The activists must understand the problem faced by the poor people of the district,” Khatiwada said, adding, “The protestors have closed the banks as well, so there is now shortage of cash too.”
The FNCCI estimates a day of shutdown here will cost Rs 2,00,000.
Chief District Officer of Taplejung Ravi Kafle said efforts are being made to address the demands of the Maoists from the central level.
The Maoists are demanding that the guilty in the murder of its activist Lagam Liwang last month be brought to book. Their other demands include compensation for the family members of the victims, and establishment of civilian supremacy in the country, among others.
