It has been learnt that the imports have been stopped by the Indian authorities for the last three days citing insecurity to the drivers due to the ongoing demonstrations staged by the Madhesi protestors along the border.The United Democratic Madhes Front (UDMF) cadres had been staging sit-ins at no man's land for the last 20 days. The irony, however, is that there was no protest on Monday.
According to Biratnagar Customs Office, no cargo vehicles entered Nepal through Biratnagar-Jogbani border on Sunday and Monday. "No cargo crossed into Nepal through Biratnagar-Jogbani border since Saturday afternoon," customs officer Rajendra Dhungana told Republica.
Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB), the Indian border security force, deployed at the Jogbani border openly sided with the agitators on Sunday by dragging Assistant Sub-Inspector Pradip Giri from the Nepali territory to the Indian side and thrashed him up. The SSB personnel had reportedly confiscated a Chinese pistol from ASI Giri.
According to the District Police Office (DPO), Morang, a meeting between security authorities of Nepal and India held on Sunday evening had agreed to direct the SSB to search for the lost pistol and return it to the Nepal Police. However, the weapon has not been handed over to Nepali authorities yet.
Following Sunday's incident, the Indian authorities have also tightened the Jogbani border for commuters crossing the border. Deployment of security personnel in both the sides of the border has increased since the incident.
Meanwhile, security authorities have ordered local traders to remove their small business shops from no man's land within two days.
