SPORTS BRIEFS: Youth Volleyball Festival Saturday

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) is organizing Youth Volleyball Festival for the first time on Saturday with the view of alluring the youths into the game. NVA is organizing the program under the youth development program of International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) for which Nepal received 1,700 balls and 100 nets worth Rs 3 million, according to NVA.



Officials of NVA said that the balls and nets will be distributed to the 75 districts associations. Meanwhile, the festival will be held at the Khula Manch, Kathmandu and will feature 10 teams of U-15 players in the boys´ section and eight in the girls´ category. [break]



Karatekas felicitated


KATHMANDU: Camelia Higher Secondary School on Friday felicitated karate players had won medals in various international tournaments. The school awarded cash prizes and track suits to karatekas Ayusha Tamang, Anup Karki, Sanju Paudel, Raju Tamang, Tanushree Mukherjee, Jenisha Lama, Shivani Gupta and Archana Neupane honoring their achievements.



Double delight for Valley Public


KATHMANDU: Host Valley Public School advanced into the pre-quarterfinals of the Seventh Valley Public Inter School Basketball Tournament on Friday in both boys´ and girls´ categories. In the boys´ section, Valley Public edged past Campion 33-28 with 11 points from Kishor Thapalia. Other winners were Galaxy, GEMS, Baba Boarding School, Universal and Kathmandu Valley School. In the girls´ section, Sonia Limbu and Sujita Thapa scored 12 points each to lead the host past defending champion Mahendra Bhavan for a 37-23 win.



Nepal´s poor show in 3x3 World Championship

KATHMANDU: Nepali teams put up a poor show in the first day of the 3x3 World Championship Basketball in Athens, Greece on Thursday. Both the men´s and women´s teams lost all three matches on Thursday. In men´s event, Slovenia thrashed Nepal 21-8 while Latvia pulled off a 21-12 victory in the second match of Nepali men´s team. Serbia also beat Nepal 21-11 in the third match of the day. Likewise, Nepali women´s team also suffered humiliating defeat in the opening day. France humbled Nepal 21-0 while Hungary thrashed Nepali girls 22-3. Slovakia also humiliated Nepal 18-2.


Gurung bags bronze despite crashing out

KATHMANDU: Nepali wushu players on Friday crashed out of the Eight Asian Wushu Championship held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam but they put up a commendable performance, according to wushu coach Panchaman Maharjan. Despite losing the matches, Nepal bagged a bronze in women´s 56 kg sansau event as one of the Nepali players, Jharana Gurung, got a direct entry into the semifinals but lost against a Chinese player. Meanwhile, Yubaraj Gurung (men´s 56 kg) lost against Laos and Rajkumar Rai (men´s 52 kg) was defeated by a Myanmar player in other sansau events. Nepal also failed to make the cut in thaulo events but the performances of Raju Maharjan, Binita Maharjan, Bidhya Maharjan and Nirmal Ale Magar were better than other South Asian players, according to coach Maharjan.
