NeCOS Cup kicks off Friday
KATHMANDU: Nepal Confederation of Sports (NeCOS) is organizing the Second NeCOS Cup Nationwide Judo Tournament from Friday. The two-day tournament will see participation of 24 teams from various districts, clubs and schools of the country. According to NeCOS Secretary Dharma Kumar Shrestha, who is also the head of the organizing committee of the tournament, altogether 277 players under the age of 20 are competing in the event which will be held at the Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre (MMAC), Naya Bazaar. The players will vie for nine golds in both men´s and women´s categories. The top three teams will bag a purse of Rs 6,111, Rs 4,111 and Rs 2,111 respectively while the best players in men´s and women´s section will be awarded Rs 1,111 each.
Pinnacle, Orient in last-16
KATHMANDU: Pinnacle and Orient advanced into the pre-quarterfinals of the First TIA Nine-A-Side Football Tournament on Thursday. Pinnacle secured a hard fought 1-0 win over Whitefield. Lalit Thapa scored the lone goal in the match. Meanwhile, Orient defeated Herald 3-0 with a brace from Ashish Thapa. Desh Bahadur Katuwal added another goal for Orient. In other matches, Morgan thrashed Princeton 9-0 with a hat-trick from Suraj Shrestha while Rhedon secured a thrilling 4-3 win over Liverpool.
Shrestha beats New Zealand IM
KATHMANDU: Nepali Candidate Master (CM) Keshav Shrestha beat IM Paul Anthony Garbett of New Zealand though Nepal lost second round of the 40th World Chess Olympiad on Thursday with New Zealand. Nepal secured 1.5 points whereas New Zealand earned 2.5 points in the second round. Shrestha beat Garbett in the 65th move. Similarly, Nepal´s No 5 Deergha Raj Joshi settled in a draw against Zuhao LukeLi. Meanwhile, first Nepali FIDE Master Manish Hamal lost the match to IM Russel John Dive in the 85th move and Prachanda Man Malakar was beaten by FIDE Master Micheal Steadman in the 23rd move. Nepali team will take on Palestine Friday.
Nobel, Premier in semis
KATHMANDU: Nobel Academy secured semifinal berth in the girls´ section of the Third Bern Hardt Cup Inter College Basketball Tournament. Nobel edged past Premier 17-11 to top group B. Premier also reached last four as the runner-up of the group. In boys´ section, GoldenGate, LRI, Trinity and Bagmati reached pre-quarterfinals. GoldenGate thrashed United Academy 84-35 while LRI edged past Times 48-41. Likewise, Trinity humbled Greenwich 62-15 as Bagmati defeated Rato Bangala 46-24.
Valley Public enters QF
KATHMANDU: Host Valley Public entered into the quarterfinals of boys´ section in the Seventh Valley Public Inter School Basketball Tournament. The host defeated Young Heart 28-14 on Thursday. Likewise, Greenland, Baba, Innovative and TIA reached the quarterfinal of the boys´ section.
