SPORTS BRIEFS: Sharad Chandra Shah critically ill

KATHMANDU, June 19: Former Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) President Sharad Chandra Shah is critically ill and is undergoing treatment in Singapore, according to his family members. Shah, who also led the National Sports Council for over ten years in the 1980s, was taken to Singapore about two weeks ago for the treatment of his stomach infection.



A family member quoted doctors as saying that Shah is kept under the support of ventilator as of Tuesday evening. [break]Shah, 64, is credited for laying the foundation of sports in Nepal as his efforts played a key role in building stadiums and covered halls in different districts of the country.


Media Cup from July 3


KATHMANDU: Nepal Sports Museum is organizing Fifth Media Cup from July 3 - 10 in the capital. The organizers had set June 24 as the deadline for team registration for the tournament to be held at the Dasharath Stadium and Sano Gaucharan. The tiesheet will be drawn on June 29. The opening and closing matches will be conducted at the Dasharath Stadium and the remaining matches will take place at Sano Gaucharan.



Dahal inaugurates new sports wing


KATHMANDU: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday urged the finance ministry to allocate budget required for the development of sports in the country. Inaugurating the All Nepal Sports Association, sports association parallel to Republic Sports Federation of Nepal that is close to newly formed Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist led by its former vice president Mohan Baidhya, he said, “There is tradition of allocating meager budget for the sports sector. This practice has to end. I urge the finance minister to allocate adequate budget for sports,” Dahal said.
