SPORTS BRIEFS: PJ Club, Nepal One into quarterfinals

KATHMANDU, July 12: Photo Journalists (PJ) Club and Nepal One Television on Thursday advanced into the quarterfinals of the Fifth Direction Nepal Media Cup Football Tournament under way in the capital.



PJ Club registered a 5-4 sudden death win over CJMC FM following a goalless draw during 70 minutes of regulation time. PJ Club´s goalkeeper Bikash Karki denied two spotkicks to secure berth for last eight. [break]



In another match, Nepal One edged past Himalayan Television 2-1 with a goal each from Mangal Lama and Binod Mainali. Sushil Baskota scored the only goal for Himalayan. The quarterfinal matches will begin from Sunday.



Army defends wheelchair basketball title

KATHMANDU
: Nepal Army defended the men´s title of Second National Wheelchair Basketball Championship on Thursday while B team of Spinal Cord Injury Association claimed women´s title. In the men´s final, Army registered a comfortable 26-7 win over Wheelchair Sports Association held at the covered hall of National Sports Council, Tripureshwar.



Under women´s category, B team of Spinal Cord Injury Association toiled hard to beat A team 5-4. Himal Aryal of Army in men´s section and Jyoti Aryal of title winning team in women´s section were declared the most valuable players. Altogether seven teams including five in men´s and two in women´s category participated in the tournament. The tournament was jointly organized by Nepal Spinal Cord Injury Sports Association and Nepal Wheelchair Basketball Association.



Trinity, GoldenGate lift titles


KATHMANDU: Trinity A and GoldenGate lifted the boy´s and girl´s titles respectively of First Pyramid Inter-college 3X3 Basketball Tournament on Thursday. Trinity edged past Morgan A 10-9 during extra time in the thrilling final. Earlier the regulation time had finished in 7-7 tie. Tenzing Yesi Lama contributed eight points in Trinity´s victory. In the girl´s title clash.



GoldenGate overcame Classing 8-5 riding on five points of Bina Nakarmi. National B and Saipal B secured third positions in the boy´s and girl´s section respectively. Lama and Nakarmi, the highest scorer of finals were declared the most valuable players in boys and girls category.
