SPORTS BRIEFS: NASA, Xavier into semis

KATHMANDU, Feb 9: NASA and Xavier International on Wednesday entered the semifinals of the 16th Professional Gyan Carnival Inter-college Basketball Tournament.



NASA thrashed Gyanodaya 41-14 riding on 16 points from Ronali Limbu to enter the last four as group A winners. [break]Similarly, Xavier had a comfortable 37-17 victory over Trinity to top group B and qualify for the semifinal. Sima Karki contributed 18 points for the winning side.


Triple win for Daffodil



KATHMANDU: The hosts Daffodil School won all three matches they played during the Fourth Daffodil Cup Inter-school Basketball and Fifth Inter-school Football Tournament on Wednesday. In senior boys´ basketball, the hosts saw off Mount Glory 57-23 with 14 points from Kiran Sherpa. Pennwood Academy beat Unique School 57-43 with Sashwat contributing 17 points in the victory. The Excelsior continued their winning streak as they outplayed Arniko 43-23 riding on 13 points from Rahul.



Sambotta eased past Golden Peak 61-40. In the last match of boys´ category, Baba School overcame Mount Kailash 32-22. In the girls´ category, nine points from Yanzi Lama helped the hosts defeat Baba School 31-27. In boys´ football, Trikon thrashed Brihaspati 10-0. Avishek Subedi and Thuseng Lama scored a hat-trick each for Trikon. Likewise, Jenish Syangden scored twice and Phurba Lama added another as the hosts Daffodil defeated Reed Model 3-1.



Bijeshwari girls win TT



KATHMANDU: Bijeshwari School on Wednesday clinched the title in the girls´ team event of the First Prime Bijeshwari Cup Inter-college and school Table Tennis Tournament. Bijeshwari defeated DAV 3-0 to lift the school team event title. In the boys´ college team event, Prime College edged past Morgan 3-2. Morgan College routed Caribbean College 3-0 to take the girls´ college team event title.



Apex, Sunshine lift cricket titles



BUTWAL: Defending champions Apex Boarding School, Shankar Nagar, and Sunshine Boarding School, Bhairahawa, on Wednesday won the girls´ and boys´ titles respectively in the Prabina Malla Memorial Rupandehi District Level Inter-school Cricket Tournament. Sunshine thumped New Horizon by seven wickets in the boys´ section while Apex surpassed Belahiya by eight runs for the girls´ title.



Apex garnered 86/2 in the allotted 18 overs and restricted Belahiya to 78/7. Nitu Bhandari of Apex, who was named the woman of the final, topscored with 33 runs. In the boys´ title decider, Sunshine achieved the victory target of 92 runs set by New Horizon in 15.2 overs losing three wickets after the latter posted 91/10 playing all 20 overs. Tejendra Adhikari (unbeaten 40) and Shankar Rana (unbeaten 17) contributed in Sunshine´s victory. Bivek Chaudhary of Sunshine was declared the man of the final for his four wickets that included a hat-trick.



Oryek brace steers HSC into semis



SIMARA: A brace from Ugandan Allen Oryek steered Himalayan Sherpa Club of Kathmandu into the semifinals of the Second Simara Gold Cup Football Tournament as they defeated Sahara Club of Pokhara 2-1 on Wednesday. After a goalless first half, Oryek opened the scoring ninth minutes after the interval and added another in the 79th minute. Uttam Gurung scored a consolation goal for Sahara during the stoppage time. Oryek, who was also the center of attraction during the match, was adjudged the man of the match.
