SPORTS BRIEFS: Narayan Academy win

KATHMANDU, Feb 19: Narayan Academy registered their first victory in the 4th Chief of the Army Staff Inter School Running Cricket Tournament 2067 on Saturday defeating New Lira by three wickets.



New Lira opted to bat first after winning the toss and set up 103 runs in the allotted 20 overs losing eight wickets. [break]



In reply, Narayan Academy met the target of 104 runs at the cost of seven wickets with only two balls to spare. Purusottam Jha of the winning team was adjudged the man-of-the-match.



In another match of the day held at the Army School, Bhaktapur, Bright Future defeated Rajan Memorial by 19 runs. Winning the toss, Rajan Memorial elected for fielding and gave away 122 runs taking four wickets 20 overs. In reply, they were restricted to 103 runs at the cost of nine wickets in the allotted overs. Bright Future´s Noor Mohammad Ansari, who scored 55 runs unbeaten, was declared the man-of-the-match.



Police, Army star with win



KATHMANDU: Departmental giants -- Nepal Police Club and Nepal Army club -- started the Second International Club Championship Workers Cup Men´s Volleyball Tournament on a winning note. Army had a straight sets 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 win over Myagdi Volleyball Training Center in the event that kicked off Saturday at the Martyrs Memorial Sports Ground, Bhaktapur. Army spiker Deep Bahadhur Khadka was adjudged the man-of-the-match.



In another match, Police had a comfortable straight sets25-19, 25-21, 25-20 win over Water Development Board, Bangladesh. Sanjay Aryal of the Police was declared the-man-of-the-match. Nepal Workers and Peasent Party President Narayanman Bijukchhe had inaugurated the tournament.


LRI, NIMS triumph



KATHMANDU: NIMS won both the boys´ and girls´ title of the Dabur Glucose D Fifth Daffodil Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Saturday played at the hosts´ court. LRI took home junior boys football title. In girl´s final, NIMS eased past TIA 28-17 riding on 15 points from Sangeeta Shrestha. Similarly, NIMS boys had a hard fought 68-66 victory over Sambotta. Sandesh Tamang contributed 19 points for the winning team.



NIMS´s Sangeeta Shrestha and Sandesh Tamang were awarded the most valuable players for the tournament in girls´ and boys´ section respectively. TIA´s Pramita Thakuri in girls´ and Daffodil´s Kiran Sherpa in boys´ were declared the top scorers. In junior boys´ football final, LRI eased past Daffodil 7-3. Swastik Adhikari, Ujwal Acharya, and Sandesh Khadka scored twice for the victorious side. Daffodil´s Urgen Lama was awarded the best player and Snow Land´s Anil Shahi got the best goalkeeper award.


Fast to Fast Group clinch Five-a-side Trophy



KATHMANDU: Fast to Fast group defeated host Club Mosses 1-0 in the final of the Club Mosses Cup Five-a-side Knockout Football Tournament on Saturday. Former national striker Nirajan Rayamajhi scored the decider in additional time for the winners. Fast to Fast were awarded Rs 50,000 along with the trophy. Likewise, Club Mosses bagged Rs 25,000. Fast to Fast´s Saurya Thapa was awarded the best player of the tournament. The event was organized by Club Mosses and Fitness Center, Jorpati, for support of Spinal Cord Injury Association.
