SPORTS BRIEFS: Host into semis

ITAHARI, March 15: The host Rastriya Jagriti Club (Red) secured berth in the last four with 2-1 win over Rani Youth Club of Birtanagar on Tuesday in the Dan Bahadur Fuyal Memorial Football Tournament underway at Itahari.



The hosts which had come up with big names of Nepali football toiled hard for the win. [break]



Striker Surendra Tamang and Tanka Basnet scored apiece for the hosts. Kebal Limbu netted the only goal for Biratnagar side. Kabbu Rai of the hosts won the man-of-the-match award. Dhrubatara Club of Damak will take on Tamke Club of Dharan in the first semifinal to be held on Thursday.



Roll Ball, Dhuku win


KATHMANDU: Nepal Roll Ball Club and Dhuku Youth Club made a flying start in the Martyrs Memorial C Division League Football qualifiers on Tuesday at the ANFA ground, Satdobato. Suraj Karki scored a hat-trick in Roll Ball´s 9-0 thumping over Swatantra Ypakar Youth Club. Similarly, Subash Ghalan and Sanjiv Maharjan netted a brace each and Prajwal Nakarimi and Prakash Rana added one each. In another match, Dhuku beat Sri Bhagwansthan Youth Club 2-0. Yoddha Thapa and Ishwor Shrestha netted one each for the winning side in the first half.



Special training scholarships


KATHMANDU: Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) on Tuesday said that it is working to provide special training scholarship to seven Nepali players. NOC President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan said scholarships will be provided to Manita Shahi and Ayasha Shakya of taekwondo, Deepak Maharjan and Maya Chaudhary of boxing, Tilak Ram Tharu of athletics, Sneha Rajya Laxmi Shah of shooting and Prem Prasad Pun of archery. Pradhan made this announcement during a press conference organized to mark 500 days countdown of London Olympics Tuesday. Meanwhile, Pradhan also informed that, NOC has authorized Australian sports firm Kingdom Sports Group to sell Olympics tickets to Nepali spectators. Nepali citizens residing in any part of the world will be given first priority to buy the tickets from Kingdom. Five percent revenue from the tickets sold will be given to NOC.



NRT in semifinals

SINDHUPALCHOWK: New Road Team (NRT) had a hard fought sudden death win over Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club on Tuesday to secure a quarterfinal spot in the San Miguel Sindhu Bhotekoshi Knockout Football Tournament underway at Lamosanghu, Sindhupalchowk. The fate of the winner was decided through sudden death after the regulation time ended in a goalless 4-4 tie. Saurav Shrestha´s spot kick converted into match decider during sudden death after his counterpart Kumar Giri was denied by NRT goalie Raju Nagarkoti. Earlier, Pratap Saiju, Bishnu KC, Sushil KC and Raghu Prajapati had converted during the shootout while Roshan Lamichhane hit wide. Similarly, Laxmi Narayan Shrestha, Hem Gurung, Bikram Limbu and Bishal Rai B achieved target during shootout for Jawalakhel but Rajkumar Paudel was denied by goalie Nagarkoti pushing the match towards sudden death.
