Shrestha, Rana selected for Asian Junior Tennis
KATHMANDU: Bijisha Shrestha and Mayanka Rana have been selected for participation in the U-14 ITF Asian Junior Tennis Championship to be held in Vietnam from January 14 to 25. Shrestha and Rana confirmed the participation after finishing the girls´ selection tournament in the second and third position on Friday. Bibhuti Karki, who finished the selection tournament on the top, had already secured the ticket for Vietnam on Thursday. Saksham Karki, Samrakshak Bhusan Bajracharya and Pranab Khanal are selected in the boys´ section. According to tennis coach Surya Bhusan Bajracharya, All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association will run a 15-day training camp for the selected six players. Five boys and seven girls had participated in the selection tournament.
Host TIA reaches semifinal
KATHMANDU: Host Trungram International Academy (TIA), Valley Public, HIMS and Kathmandu Valley School reached the semifinals of the 10th TIA Cup Inter School Basketball Tournament in boys´ section. TIA defeated Innovative 58-45 on Friday to secure semifinal spot while Valley Public edged past Daffodil 35-21. HIMS beat Gyan Niketan 48-38 and Kathmandu Valley upset Forward 40-30. In girls´ section, Valley Public thrashed Kathmandu Valley 18-9 and Mt Kailash humbled Chandbagh 21-4 to secure places in the last four. Likewise, Bagmati pulled off a 14-12 victory over TIA on Friday.
CAN names 18-member women´s team
KATHMANDU: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) downsized the national women´s cricket team to 18 members on Friday and appointed Rubina Chhetri Belbase as its captain. CAN had earlier called up 25 woman cricketers for the first round of closed camp to prepare for the upcoming ACC Women´s Championship. The 18-member team includes Saraswati Chaudhary, Karuna Bhandari, Sarita Magar, Rashmi Sharma Chaulagain, Silu Rijal, Indu Verma, Trishna Singh, Rekha Rawal, Shova Ale Magar, Mamta Thapa, Sangita Gauchan, Madhu Thapa, Nira Rajopadhyay, Sonu Khadka, Nery Thapa, Roshani Bohara and Sita Rana Magar.
Among the 25 called up for the first round of closed camp, Arati Bidari, Anjali Chand, Kabita Gautam, Manisha Rawal, Janaki Bhatta, Mamata Kumari Chaudhary and Geeta Chudal have been left out of the team. The championship is scheduled to be held in Thailand from January 21 to 31. CAN will announce the final squad comprising 14 players later.
