SPORTS BRIEFS: Baluwatar wins title

KATHMANDU: Baluwatar Cricket Club won the title of Kathmandu District Selection Cricket Tournament on Tuesday as it thrashed Mahavir Club by 83 runs at the TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur. Baluwatar elected to bat and put up 242/4 in allotted 40 overs as Suman Uday remained unbeaten with 92 runs off 93 balls. Indra Kamal Manandhar scored 67 runs while Prakash Bista remained unbeaten with 37 runs. In reply, Mahavir was all out for 159 runs in 36 overs. Sandeep Shrestha (54 runs) and Monir Kumar Shrestha (30 runs) were the highest contributors for Mahavir. Ritesh Singh claimed three wickets for Baluwatar. Baluwatar received Rs 10,000 along with the winner trophy while Mahavir bagged Rs 5,000. Uday was adjudged man-of-the-final for his brilliant batting. Nazir Sheikh of Mahavir was adjudged the best batsman of the tournament as he scored 155 runs in three matches including a century. Baluwatar´s Bijay Gautam, who claimed nine wickets in three matches, received the best bowler award while his teammate Indra Kamal Manandhar, who scored 191 runs in four matches and took seven wickets, got the award for player-of-the-series.



Both St Xavier´s in semis

KATHMANDU: Defending champion St Xavier´s, Godawari and St Xavier´s, Jawalakhel reached the semifinal of the 17th Father Moran Memorial Invitation Inter School Football Tournament on Tuesday. St Xavier´s, Godawari defeated Nepal Don Bosco 1-0 as Nischal Acharya scored the lone goal of the match. The host team will take on Nepal APF School in the semifinal. Meanwhile, St Xavier´s, Jawalakhel edged past Kathmandu University High School (KUHS) 3-1 on Tuesday. Saurav Dhakal, Shirshak Shrestha and Shreyash Shrestha scored a goal each for the winning team while Hiten Dahal scored the consolation goal for KUHS. St Xavier´s, Jawalakhel will lock horns with Little Angels School in semifinal on Thursday.



National, Xavier Int´l reach QF


KATHMANDU: Defending champion National Campus and Xavier International College reached the quarterfinal round of the boys´ section in the 10th Prime Cup Inter College Basketball Tournament. National thrashed Rosebud 66-36 on Tuesday to reach quarterfinal as Bibek Shrestha scored 14 points for the winning team while Xavier beat Premier 59-56. Raju Kattel netted 32 points for the winner. Ridding on the Narhari Gautam´s 31 points, Morgan defeated NASA 65-54 while Golden Gate crushed Liverpool 57-37 to reach last eight. Likewise, Gurukul humbled Bern Hardt 52-27 in the round robin league match of the girls´ section. Samiksha Neupane scored 18 points for Gurukul.
