SPORTS BRIEFS: Adhikari defends TT title

KATHMANDU, Jan 26: Deepa Adhikari of Avenues Television defended the girls´ singles title of the Second Inter-television Table Tennis Tournament on Wednesday.



Adhikari defeated Sumitra Bhattarai of Image Channel 11-7, 11-7, 17-15 in the title clash held at the National Table Tennis Training Foundation, Lainchaur. [break]



Tika Dhakal and Anita Giri Karki of Nepal Television jointly finished third. In the men´s singles, Manoj Thapa of Nepal Television defeated Amar Pradhan of Kantipur Television 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 with ease to lift the title. Sudarshan Rajbhandari and Madan Acharya of Nepal Television finished third. The pair of Manoj Thapa and Madan Acharya won the men´s doubles title while Abhishek Shakya and Karan Dhungana duo of Avenues Television claimed the second position.



The tournament was organized on the occasion of the 26th Anniversary of Nepal Television. Altogether 62 players from 10 television channels had participated in the two-day event.


Golden Gate in final



The boys´ team of Golden Gate College defeated NASA 76-46 on Wednesday to advance into the final of the Kirtipur Festival Cup Open Women´s and Men´s Basketball Tournament. Golden Gate will take on either South Siders or Whitehouse in the title clash. In the women´s round robin matches held at Kirtipur Basketball Court, Whitehouse and Prime won their respective matches. Gyanu Gauchan scored 24 points for Prime as they defeated Nakhipot Club 52-31. Likewise, Whitehouse eased past Rara Hill 43-14. Maya Syangden contributed 12 points for Whitehouse.


Inter-school chess kicks off



Inter-school Chess Tournament kicked off Wednesday at the office of the organizers Private and Boarding Schools´ Organization Nepal (PABSON) in Gongabu. Bisekha and Purnima Jaiswal of Deep Jyoti School are jointly leading the girls´ category with 2.5 points after the completion of the third round matches.



Jamuna Karki of SEB School and Beena Jaiswal of Deep Jyoti are trailing behind in the second place with two points each. In the boys´ matches, U-15 Nepal champion Rupesh Jaiswal and Ipran Shrestha of Deep Jyoti School, Manoj Shrstha of Bindhya Basini School, Rojan Shrestha of Om Education, Tejan Bajracharya of The Spangle, Rajan Thapa of New Zenith and Bivek Thapa Magar of Adwit School took joint lead bagging two points each. In teachers´ category, Charles Orwison of Holy Garden School won all three matches to lead the standings while Robin Sunar of Greenland is in the second position.



Altogether 46 students and 10 teachers from 20 schools of Kathmandu are competing in the two-day event.
