SPORT BRIEFS: Nepal continues dominance

KATHMANDU, March 18: Nepal continued dominance in the second South Asian ITF Taekwondo Championship on Friday claiming 35 gold medals.



Nepal also bagged 29 silver and 35 bronze medals by the end of the second day to top the medal chart. India is in the second position with 23 gold, 19 silver and 16 bronze medals while Bangladesh has won four gold, one silver and two bronze to keep them in the third position. [break]



In the girls´ 35-40 kg weight category bout, Anuska Thapa won gold for Nepal while Dimple Rajthala bagged gold in the 40 kg weight category. Sushma Bomjon, Yog Maya BK, Anusha Shrestha and Nima lama also won gold for Nepal.


MMC to replace Bangladeshi club


DHARAN: Mirpur Football Club from Bangladesh has pulled out of the 13th edition of the International Invitational Budda Subba Tuborg Gold Cup starting from May 22. Stating visa problem, the Bangladeshi team opted not to compete in the tournament, the organizers said Friday. President of the organizing committee Subash Rai said that Manang Marshyangdi Club will replace the Bangladeshi Club. After the pullout of the Bangladeshi club, Namchi FC of Sikkim is the only remaining foreign club in the tournament.



Shantinagar, Painachal win


KATHMANDU: Shantinagar Youth Club and Painachal Youth Club registered victory in the Martyrs Memorial C Division League Football qualifiers on Friday. Shantinagar defeated Tinchuli Youth Club 1-0 at the ANFA Complex, Lalitpur. Dil Kumar Limbu scored the decider in the match. Meanwhile, Painachal beat United Sundas Club, Lukla, 3-0. A brace from Umesh Thapa and a goal from Subarna KC helped Painachal thrash Sundas.



Tyamke Club lift trophy


ITAHARI: Tyamke Club, Dharan, clinched the title of the Fifth Late Dan Bahadur Phuyal Memorial Gold Cup Football Tournament defeating the hosts National Jagriti, Itahari, 2-0 in the final on Friday. Yogesh Gurung and Jiwan Rai scored a goal each for Dharan. Rai was later declared man-of-the-match. Three-time champions Dharan bagged Rs 50,000 while Itahari received 25,000. Other players who received awards were Kabi Rai (emerging player), Surendra Tamang and Tanka Basnet (highest scorers), and Sugam Shrestha (best player), all from Itahari.


Triton triumph


KATHMANDU: Triton defeated Xavier International 45-32 in the First VC Cup Inter-college Boys Basketball Tournament on Friday. Rabi Giri contributed 16 points in Triton´s victory in the match held at Patan Multiple Campus. Ketan Khadka of the winning team was later adjudged the most valuable player.
