The team, which will work under the hospital director, will oversee service delivery and report to the director. The hospital management decided to form the committee after several patients complained of being cheated by doctors and health workers.
"We have noticed that patients are being sent to private clinics in return for commissions. Some of our health workers and even doctors are involved in the malpractice," said Dr Bulanda Thapa, director of the hospital. "We will not tolerate such practices in our hospital."[break]
According to Dr Thapa, he has noticed that patients are being referred to private clinics and hospitals mostly from the Out Patient Department (OPD) and the Emergency Department. Dr Thapa has already warned the doctors against referring the patients to private clinics and hospital. He said stern action will be taken against doctors found engaged in such malpractices.
Dr Thapa admitted that doctors, paramedics and even ambulance drivers are taking advantage of patients´ helplessness. He said some of the ambulance drivers are paid Rs 500 per patient for taking them to private hospitals.
The hospital management admitted that some patients are forced to wait for months to receive treatment in the hospital.
