The jeep of District Development Committee Doti (Se 1.Jha 207) knocked down nine persons walking on the left side of the highway killing three on the spot.
The dead have been identified as Manga Guru Chaudhary, 50, Bamdev Joshi, 69, and Bhojraj Bhatta, 68, of Geta VDC in Kailali. Chaudhary was a rickshaw-puller. Joshi and Bhatta were returning home on their bicycles.
Jeep driver Khem Bahadur Shrestha died while being treated in Seti Zonal Hospital.
A fifth victim Maniram Chaudhary (45) of Geta VDC-5 was found dead in a bush near the accident site on Friday. Meanwhile, Dhirendra Dhami (17) of Geta VDC-7 died while undergoing treatment in Lucknow, India, police said.
According to Chief District Officer Gehanath Bhandari, the injured have been taken to India for further treatment after initial treatment at Seti Zone Hospital on Thursday night. Other injured, including two children, are receiving treatment at Seti Zone Hospital.
“We were heading to Chauraha. We were walking on the left. Suddenly, the jeep hit on our back,” said Barsha Chaudhary, 8, who was injured in the accident together with her 12-year-old sister Menuka. They were the first to be smacked down by the jeep.
“After we collapsed, we also saw the jeep hitting others,” they recalled.
Eye witnesses guess the driver must have been drunk.
