A man had shot Singhaniya dead at Shiva Chowk, the busiest area of Janakpur, at 7:30 in the evening on March 1, 2010 while he was reveling in the Holi festival. Singhaniya was killed less than a month after another media tycoon Jamim Shah was shot dead in Kathmandu. [break]
Police and local administration have not paid much attention in investigations of the case despite a three-member team formed by the police headquarters under SSP Bijaya Bhatta coming to Janakpur for investigations.
The District Police Office, Dhanusha also had formed a separate three-member team under DSP Roop Kumar Neupane and initiated investigations. One year on, both the teams have yet to submit their reports with the SSP-led team returning to Kathmandu after a week while DSP Neupane has since been transferred from Janakpur on the charge of having nexus with criminals.
DSP Neupane has been demoted to inspector while inspector of the Armed Police Force Surendra Jha, another member of Neupane´s team, was also transferred six years after the incident.
The third member of Neupane´s team Sanjeev Jha, a civilian, was arrested on the charge of firing illegal weapons and had organized a press conference upon his release claiming that the whole investigation team was sabotaged to prevent the report from becoming public.
He had accused that some influential businessmen of Janakpur were involved in Singhaniya´s murder and they had used their influence to sabotage the investigation team. An officer at the District Police Office concurred and said the team was attacked after it had made some breakthrough in investigation.
“The rumor about involvement of some local businessmen in Singhaniya´s murder is true. The murderers will be arrested within one month if the police showed will power,” the officer, refusing to be identified, claimed.
