Sigdel beats Malla in longest match

KATHMANDU, June 6: Sudarshan Sigdel defeated Aavash Malla 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in a marathon quarterfinal match of U-16 boys´ singles during the First Boris Lissanevitch Memorial Junior Open Tennis Tournament held at the Satdobato tennis court, Lalitpur on Wednesday.



The three-setter that lasted 3 hours 25 minutes was the longest U-16 match recorded in the history of Nepali tennis. On Tuesday, the U-12 girls´ singles match between Ira Rawat and Karuna Guachan had lasted 3 hours 10 minutes.[break]



In the other quarterfinal matches held on Wednesday, Ivanhoe Lissanevitch beat Subodh Udas 6-0, 6-1, Abhay Gauchan overcame Saksham Karki 6-2, 7-5 and Ashok Kunwar registered a hard-fought 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Pranav Kayastha.



In the U-16 girls´ singles, national champion Aslesha Lissanevitch, Bijisha Shrestha, Bibhuti Karki and Manjita Nyachhon advanced into the semifinals. In the quarterfinal matches, Lissanevitch handed a double bagel 6-0, 6-0 to Basudha Devkota, Shrestha thumped Shivalika Rana 6-0, 6-1 and Karki routed Sachi Gurung 6-0, 6-3, while Nyachhon earned a walkover from Anushka Joshi.



In the U-12 girls´ singles, Ira Rawat and Mahika Rana advanced into the final. Rawat defeated top seeded Mayanka Rana 6-4, 6-2 while Mahika registered a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Anne Mathema.



In the U-12 boys´ singles, top seeded Samrakshan Bhushan Bajracharya set up a title clash with Pranav Khanal. Bajracharya routed Satyap Ilam 6-0, 6-0 and Khanal defeated Samrakshan´s brother Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya 6-2, 6-3 to advance into the final.



Similarly, Ira Rawat and Alsa Regmi have advanced into the final of U-10 girls´ singles. Rawat registered an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Nima Rokka while Regmi thumped Avilasha Bista 6-0, 6-0.
