Shutdown affects life in eastern region

ILAM, March 19: Life in various districts in eastern part of the country was badly affected due to a shutdown called by a student group close to the Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajyaparishad.



The student group called the shutdown in various nine districts of the eastern region demanding that Manil Tamang, a student who was killed at the Dhulabari of Jhapa during student´s election period one year ago, be declared martyr.



The agitators have also demanded Rs 1 million compensation for the victim´s family. There was no vehicular movement in Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Dhankuta, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha districts due to the shutdown.



Educational institutions, factories and markets remained closed. Demonstrators didn´t allow even motorcycles on the streets. Tribhuvan University-affiliated colleges and higher secondary schools in the districts have been closed for the last one week.



The district-level examination of grade eight in Ilam was put off due to the shutdown. Examinations scheduled for Friday and Sunday were deferred. The agitators have also called an indefinite strike to be effective from Sunday.
