KATHMANDU, Jan 5: “I would like to be remembered as a woman of substance, an independent woman who led the world distinctively and made my country proud.”[break]

This answer to the question, “Who would you like to be remembered as after your death?”, given by contestant number 10, Shreeya Poudyal, gave her the crown of the Republica Miss Teen Nepal 2009 on New Year’s Eve last Thursday.

Nothing else could have been a better New Year gift than the title crown of Republica Miss Teen Nepal 2009 to this 17-years-old student of National Campus. After more than a month of grooming, Poudyal’s dream finally came true on New Year’s Eve.

Sharing the first and second runners-up titles in the competition were Monika KC and Evita Tamrakar.

Organized by Kathmandu JCI, and the title sponsored by Republica National Daily, 24 contestants altogether walked the ramp in the competition. With technical problems nagging the event now and then, the contestants however made sure that they coped up with all big and small technical snags of the event, and continued their roles on the stage, which was telecast live by ABC Television.

No matter how hard they promised themselves to remain strong even if they did not win the competition, many could not stop their tears and emotions after the Top 10 names got short-listed. But because it was a competition, it was obvious for only one to take home the title. Poudyal became the fortunate one to earn the Republica Miss Teen Nepal 2009 title award while the rest made themselves happy with other title felicitations.

Tête-à-tête

How has life changed since last Thursday?

I feel good when the same students of my college look at me and say, “Hey look, there goes Miss Teen Nepal 2009!” This never happened before. I’ve become more conscious of what I wear, how I speak, what I eat, and where I go. I feel so special.

Who was your biggest competitor?

It definitely has to be Evita Tamrakar. Besides, all of us were pretty confident that we would win. But we also knew that the title was for only one. I knew it deep within

that the shining crown was made just for me.

What did you first think when you were announced the winner?

For the first time in my life, I got to experience how it felt to be the real princess of the fairytales. I often read about princesses. That evening I got to be one.

How were your relations with the other 23 contenders vying for the title?

Let me be honest to this one. On the outside, we all were good to each other, but deep within, we envied each other. It was a competition. There was no point in developing good friendship.

Pick up the best moment you spent while participating in this competition…

It has to be the Christmas Day. All of us enjoyed the Christmas cake and also had a dance party.

What next? Modeling, film career or…

It would be decent modeling for me, meaning modeling in such a way that my creativity isn’t compared with my skin showing off. And as I’m a student of management, my first priority will always remain banking.

How supporting are your parents on your decision of taking up modeling in the near future?

They are pretty positive.

[Shreeya’s father, Pushkar Poudyal, who was with us during this interview, however said that he is not positive about allowing her daughter to get into serious modeling]

Lastly, go on with all the promises that are often made after winning beauty pageants…

Frankly speaking, there are no promises to keep for now. I wouldn’t go on saying I’ll do so and so for society and all the exaggerated promises which are never met. Hello! I’m just 17. There’s a long way to go. I won a competition. I’m content with that for now.
