Mutton sellers, however, claimed she-goat traders were selling the meat in the name of mutton.
The Mutton Sellers´ Association, formed under chairmanship of Uddab Timilsina on Tuesday, said many hotels, restaurants and party venues were also serving she-goat meat in the guise of mutton.
"We have been defamed because of this. This practice has also affected our business. That´s why we started a campaign to ban sales of she-goat meat in the market," said Bishnu Dhakal, secretary of the association.
According to the association, she-goat meat is consumed by few ethnic groups and rise in slaughtering of she-goat will affect goat production.
Mutton worth Rs 7 billion is consumed annually in Nepal of which mutton worth only Rs 1 billion is generated in the country.
"It is essential to protect she-goats to raise domestic production of mutton," the association said.
