Ruling parties entrust PM and DPM to name new IGP Rulling

KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Ruling parties on Friday entrusted the responsibility to choose a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) to Prime minister Baburam Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar.



After the meeting of ruling parties at prime minister´s residence at Baluwatar, vice chairman of Sadbhawana party, Laxman Lal Karna said that the ball was in the court of parties leading the government. [break]He said, “We have suggested the ministers to appoint IGP with mutual understanding and on merit at earliest.”



“Among ruling parties Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic and UCPN Maoist have their individual stand on the candidates but we are not supporting anyone,” a leader of United Democratic Madheshi Front (UDMF) told Republica. He added, “We believe the most qualified man must lead the police department.”



According to the sources, PM Bhattarai favors Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Kuber Singh Rana whereas DPM Gachchhadar supports AIGP Visma Prasai. To resolve the dispute, the ruling parties decided to meeting again on Saturday and take a final decision no later than Monday.



Talks are underway among the coalition partners on forming consensus among the parties for the new IGP since last few weeks.
