KATHMANDU, April 3: The Nepali Congress (NC) has decided not to field a candidate for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The party said it would refrain from contesting the Speaker’s position as it is expected to claim the post of Deputy Speaker. According to parliamentary practice, the Deputy Speaker’s position is usually held by a member from the opposition.

NC General Secretary Pradeep Paudel said the party would support whichever candidate is nominated for the Speaker’s position, emphasizing that the role should remain neutral.
“The Speaker’s role should be impartial, so we will naturally support whichever candidate is nominated,” Paudel said. “As the Deputy Speaker’s position goes to the opposition and we are the second-largest party, we will stake our claim to that post.”
The election for the Speaker is scheduled for April 5. The Parliament Secretariat has set 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on April 3 as the time for filing nominations.
The final list of candidates will be published at 2:30 pm today, the secretariat said.
