The police also disclosed that customs officials are allowing traders to bring goods in the country from India even with older and overwritten declaration forms. Apart from that, customs officials have also been allowing the traders to import more goods than they have mentioned in the declaration forms. Chief of Biratnagar Customs Binod Kunwar admitted the anomalies. “It is true that latest efforts to check revenue evasion have disclosed traders are taking advantage of crowd and rush at the Customs Declaration Section,” he said.
“These traders are smart people. They exercise numerous tricks to dodge us,” said Padhumna Karki, chief of Morang Police. In such a cat-and-mouse game, sometimes police win, but most of the times traders are managing to outplay them.
Given the reality, Morang Police has requested the Biratnagar customs to tighten its operations.
“Smuggling can be stopped only if customs officials functioned efficiently and with high morale. Our post-clearance exercise alone is simply not enough to control it,” stated Karki.
