The president handed over Rs 100,000 and a letter of appreciation to bronze-medalist Maharjan.[break]
After the program, Maharjan said the honor he received has encouraged him to do better in the future.
“If the government sends me for training overseas, I am sure that I would be successful in bringing good results in the future,” he said.
“This award is for his hard work and dedication,” President Yadav said, adding, “I am hopeful that Maharjan will one day bring gold medal for the country.”
Although Maharjan has not yet received the cash prize announced by the government, he has been honored by Nepal Boxing Association and different associations. The government had announced a cash prize of Rs 300,000 for him.
Bhimsen Das Pradhan, president of Nepali Congress Kathmandu, requested the concerned authorities to forward Maharjan´s name for the medals to be awarded by the president.
“I also request to set up a welfare fund for the players,” added Pradhan.
Puspa Man Manandhar, president of Nepal Kyokushin Karate Do, said the players must be awarded to motivate them to do better.
