“Though the level of need for bridges is very low, we are compelled to put programs to construct the bridges in many places," said a senior official at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works.
The official informed that four bridges are under construction within the stretches of 18 km and six are going to be constructed in Andhikhola of Syangja, despite the fact that there is no need for them there.
“There are other more places where bridges are being constructed without any planning and need,” the official added.
The official also said the number of bridges construction also increased this year due to rise in road networks.
Balaram Mishra, chief of Road Division Office, Kathmandu, said 12 bridges are under construction in Kathmandu valley including six in Kathmandu. Bridges are being constructed in Sinamangal, Danchhi, Gaurighat, Koteshwar, Dhobi Khola and Bishnumati river in Kathmandu.
A source said a total of 250 bridges are under construction across the country. Three year interim plan has envisaged constructing 104 bridges.
Pothole-free roads planned
Targeting Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the ministry of physical planning has initiated a campaign to make roads pothole-free in Kathmandu.
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation has already requested the ministry of physical planning to make the valley roads pothole-free to ensure hassle free movement of tourists during the tourism year.
According to Mishra, around Rs 400 million would be spent to make over 100 km roads pothole free through periodic maintenance.
