Police stuns APF to clinch title

DHANGADHI, Dec 29: Nepal Police Club edged past Armed Police Force (APF) 1-0 on Saturday in a must win match to clinch the title of First Women´s National League Football Tournament held in Dhangadhi, Kailali.



Chandra Bhandari scored the all important goal for Police as it stunned the title contender APF, which is studded with most players of the national team. APF with 18 points could have lifted the trophy had it achieved draw but Police with 16 points was in dire need of victory for the trophy. [break]



As the champion Police bagged a purse of Rs 300,000 and the runner-up APF received Rs 150,000. Nepal Army remained satisfied for the third place and Far-western Region finished fourth. Army received Rs 75,000 and Far-Western Region Rs 50,000.







Skipper Chandra Bhandari scored the decisive through spotkick in the 15th minute. The spotkick was awarded after APF player handed the ball in the area after the ball shot by police player rebounded off the pole. Both the teams created some chances but failed to utilize them.



"We were under pressure to win the match as APF could have become champion had it earned a draw," Police coach Sandesh Shrestha said after the match. "But the player put in better performance than my expectations. Such tournaments will be vital for the development of women´s football in the country."

In another match of the day, Far-western Region and Nepal Army shared point playing 0-0 draw.



Chandra Bhandari of Police was declared the best player and was awarded with a scooter for her feat. Police Namita Kumari Dali and Sanesh Shrestha were declared the best custodian and coach respectively. Army´s Renuka Nagarkoti was adjudged the best midfielder, Far-western´s Amrita Jaisi best defender and APF´s Anu Lama won best forward award respectively. Each of them received a purse of Rs 25,000.



Altogether eight teams including three departmental and five regional teams competed in the tournament.
