KATHMANDU, April 10: Home Ministry has formed a three-member committee to recommend names of senior police officers for filling immediate higher positions. [break]

The three-member committee headed by Home Secretary Dr Gobinda Kusum is entrusted with the responsibility to recommend names of Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) in both Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) to fill the vacant positions of Additional Inspector Generals(AIGs).

Two other members of the recommendation committee include Secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Madhav Poudel and the chiefs of respective police organizations.

Altogether five positions of AIGs in Nepal Police and two positions in APF are vacant for months.

The positions of five of the seven Additional Inspector Generals (AIGs) in Nepal Police fell vacant after the former Inspector General Hem Bahadur Gurung and four other AIGs retired on February 16.

Likewise, two of the five AIG positions in APF have yet to be filled. The positions are lying vacant after AIGs Rohit Thapa and Ambar Nembang Subba retired about six months ago.

Officials at the Home Ministry said the committee will carry out a detailed study about the work performance of the contenders, their past conduct and overall organizational skills.

The move comes as per the recommendations made by a high-level security organs strengthening task force formed under lawyer Yuvraj Sangraula. The task force formed after the police mutiny in Nepalgunj and other parts of the country has suggested various measures to revamp the police organizations in tune with the changed context.

Home Ministry spokesperson Nabin Ghimire said they are developing work plan based on the recommendation of the task force’s report.
