KATHMANDU, Sept 5: Out going Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Chhatra Man Singh Gurung on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the stalled integration and rehabilitation of Maoists combatants despite Nepal Army´s strong willingness to end the peace process within the stipulated time.

Addressing a farewell program organized by Nepal Army, General Gurung said, “Keeping in mind that there will have no negative impact in NA´s professional and career development aspects, army took the security responsibility of the Maoist combatants, weapons and camps but the integration process has stalled for long because of political reason and not because of us.” [break]

However, after three months dispute over differences regarding the age of the combatants and their academic qualifications, the Special Committee on last Monday took a decision to resume the stalled process of the integration of the Maoist combatants from September 6.

Recapping his three year tenure, General Gurung said, “I tried my best for timely reforms of internal structure of the army, reforms in officer´s career planning, appointment and promotion but the government failed to address the minimum requirements.”

He added that the key to addressing the demands is not with the army headquarter.

Newly appointed army chief General Gaurav Shumsher Rana spoke of the successful term of General Gurung and of leading the army despite political disputes, security sensitivity and economic crisis.

General Rana will take charge of the national army after Gurung retires on September 8.
