We have also seen how during strikes innocent people get the brunt of the misplaced anger of the ‘strikewallas.’ We know it’s not justified, but is there anything we can do to demand better security for us? With the proof that it matters not, whether one has trained people for personal protection, it’s only natural to question security in Nepal.
Rajesh Bhandari, 14, from Butwal, sums it up in a few words, “Poor and unsatisfactory for the people.”
Through our Facebook page, Kundan Regmi shares his opinion, “It’s totally unsatisfactory, and actually pathetic. When important and high-profile people, who have bodyguards for protection, get shot during the day in the capital and there’s no sign of the culprits being traced, what level of security can be expected for the common people living in the different corners of Nepal? We’re bound to live in fear 24/7.”
With most people expressing discontent over the security system in Nepal, surely something has to be done. It’s not fair that we fear for our leaders as well as for ourselves. If a country’s leaders can so easily be harmed and no answer found for the incidents, what’s to be expected for the common people?
Keshar Shahi, 16, a student of Budanilkantha School, says, “Security in Nepal is truly not at all a matter to be satisfied with. There are countless numbers of strikes of different and so called political parties and other organizations which have been causing serious problems in the daily lives of the Nepali people. Though we also had ‘peace treaties’ and table talks trying to restore peace in the country, today there are still lots of crimes happening.Compared to other nations, we don’t really have very good securities at the airports, either. We also don’t have easy access to the police in case of need. I’ve seen very good security systems in America and Dubai and the public there have a sense of security anywhere they go. Unlike in Nepal where we have to take risks while doing everything. Maybe, one day, we’ll have good security in the country.”
It is with this hope that we shall live. How far our leaders work to provide a safe haven for us is still to be seen.
