KATHMANDU, Dec 7: Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-N) has called on the government and the Maoists to exercise restraint in view of the violence during the recent eviction of squatters by the government from Dudejhari forest area, Kailai district.

The OHCHR is also looking into allegations of excessive use of force by security personnel resulting in deaths of reportedly three individuals and attacks on security forces using traditional weapons by the individuals resisting the eviction, read an OHCHR statement issued on Monday.

“Through our field presence, we have been monitoring the situation and interacting with actors on the ground to minimize the chances of further violence. I call on the national actors to exercise restraint and prevent any incidents, which could further aggravate the fragile situation in the region,” the statement issued Richard Bennett, Representative of OHCHR-N, as saying.
