OHCHR-N Representative Richard Bennett conveyed concerns over the promotion of Lal Bahadur Chaudhary and Kundan Phaujdar by meeting Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Chief of Department of International Relations of Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) on Friday.
Chaudhary and Phaujdar are two of the four main accused in the murder of the Bara-based journalist Sah. The UCPN-M has also admitted the role of its cadres in the murder of the journalist.
According to news reports, the accused have been promoted as secretariat members of the party´s district committee.
“When I previously raised my concerns over the case of Birendra Sah with UCPN-M leadership, I was assured that the accused are no longer with the party. I am shocked to learn that two accused cadres, against whom there are outstanding arrest warrants, have been promoted,” a statement quoted OHCHR-N Chief Bennett as saying.
According to the statement, Mahara assured Bennett that he would discuss the matter with the party leadership.
