KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The National Women Commission (NWC) has stated its serious attention was drawn to the news reports that legislation has been forwarded for giving legal recognition to surrogacy.

The Commission’s reaction comes when a few hospitals are said to be illegally operating surrogacy services and the Ministry of Health and Population has forwarded works relating to providing legal recognition to the service. News about this were carried by various media recently.

In a press release today, NWC has appealed to the government to follow the Supreme Court’s order regarding the surrogacy service and not to move ahead the legislation process for the same.

“The Commission strongly condemns the practice of selling and buying the motherhood and the reproductive capacity of women, especially the economically poor and unemployed women for money,” the press release undersigned by NWC spokesperson and member Manu Humagain states.

The Commission also demanded forwarding action against those involved in such practice in the context of lack of legal guarantee regarding the rights of the mother and father over the offspring born from surrogacy and other issues as the citizenship of the child born in this way. RSS
