KATHMANDU, June 20: NSC Member-secretary Yuvaraj Lama formally inaugurated a special training program for outstanding players amidst a function in the capital on Monday. Lama handed over sportswear to athletics coach Mohan Ghale on the occasion.

National Sports Council (NSC) had started the training program last Wednesday targeting medals at the South Asian Games, Asian Games and Olympics.[break]

NSC is conducting the training program giving continuity to its Vision 20-20 policy introduced by former member-secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha.

"Vision 20-20 was introduced but its secretariat was left without any specific duty and we also saw that budget at the NSC was frozen. In this scenario, we came up with the idea of training program," said Kul Bahadur Thapa, chief of the Vision 20-20 secretariat.

Inaugurating the program, Lama said that the Vision 20-20 policy needs amendment but should be continued. "Both the training program and policy implementation should be continued to achieve better results in the future," said Lama.

Lama said that sports development committees will be formed in every village and the policy will focus on grassroots level.

A total of 46 athletes from 13 different sports have been selected for the special training. The players include six karatekas, five taekwondo and five wushu players. Four players each from athletics and boxing, and three players each from badminton, judo, shooting, swimming, table-tennis and weightlifting are part of the training program. Likewise, two players each from archery and wrestling are also undergoing training.

"South Asian Games and Asian Games medalists as well as upcoming players have been called up for the training. We are targeting better results at the international level," said Thapa.

Every player will get Rs 250 per day along with sportswear during the training.
