NSC awards cash prize to medalists

KATHMANDU, Aug 1: National Sports Council (NSC) on Monday awarded cash prizes to players who have helped enhance the country´s reputation in the international arena.



NSC awarded medal winners of the South Asian Judo Championship held in Islamabad, Pakistan in May; the Second Men´s World Bodybuilding Championship held in India last October, and the Eighth South Asian Bodybuilding Championship held in Thimpu, Bhutan earlier this year.[break]



The players who had won medals in individual events were selected for the awards, while the coaches also received cash prizes.



Shyam Shrestha, who had won bronze in the World Bodybuilding Championship, received Rs 65,000 from NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama amidst a function held at the NSC hall in Tripureshwar.



Likewise, judo player Saroj Maharjan had won gold medal in Pakistan while Ramesh Magar, Phupu Lhamu Khatri and Sushila Adhikari had clinched silver. Judo players who had secured bronze in the regional championship are Rajan Joshi, Indira Rai, Radha Devi Rai and Pramila Khadka.



In the South Asian Bodybuilding Championship, Ravi Man Shakya and Gyan Narayan Maharjan had secured silver while Sachit Pradhan and Sanjeev Kumar Shrestha had claimed bronze medals.



Gold medalist Saroj Maharjan received Rs 50,000, while the silver and bronze medalists each received Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.



Bodybuilding coach Gyanendra Nakarmi and judo coaches Bir Bahadur Rana and Rohit Kumar Basnet received Rs 5,000 each.



The total prize money was Rs 400,000. NSC also handed over felicitation letters to the players, coaches and their concerned sports associations.



NSC Member Secretary Lama said though the cash prize was not substantial it was awarded with good intention and would give a positive message.



“The cash prize is not so big but we took the initiative to honor the achievements of the players,” said Lama.



Nepal Body Building and Fitness Association´s General Secretary Dinesh Rajbhandari expressed delight at the first honor it received. He said the association had always been overlooked in the past despite its success at the international level.



Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya said such incentives would further motivate the players to perform well in the future.


Korea denies visa to Nepali boxers


South Korean embassy in Kathmandu denied visa to Nepali boxing team scheduled to participate in the Asian Boxing Championship to be held in Incheon from August 3 to 13.



Asian medalist Deepak Maharjan and Sudesh Manandhar are representing Nepal in the championship while Raj Shrestha and Ram Awale are the coach and the manager of the Nepali team respectively.[break]



“The embassy returned passports today (on Monday) and denied visa,” said Rajiv Shrestha, the general secretary of Nepal Boxing Association (NBA).



“After embassy´s denial, we sent a letter to the organizing committee that sent back an email informing that they had talked to the embassy in Kathmandu and asking us to go to the embassy tomorrow (on Tuesday).”



Shrestha informed that NBA has prepared all the documents required as per the new visa process.
