Noyo enjoying life

Smart, graceful, assertive and yet down to earth, model Noyo Singh is a known face on the Nepali screen. She has worked in more than 30 Nepali music videos and was recently a judge for Mega Model Season Two, a Nepali female model hunt competition aired by Image Channel. An MBA graduate, Noyo is a strong believer in hard work. Republica caught up with this talented human resource officer at Laxmi Bank for a chit chat.

Your current projects?

I’ve been very busy with my job and I haven’t been able to take up modeling assignments as often as I want to. But I’m open to offers.

How was the experience of judging a young group of models for MegaModel?

I saw and interacted with the talented participants from the preliminary rounds and I’m proud of all of them. Things were very different when I started out as a model. There was no training institute or mentor and we were left to ourselves.

Models Sona Shrestha, Sijan Bhattachan and I ventured in to the Nepali modeling field at the same time. Sijan and I often recall our struggles when we started out during our occasional meetings.

Did you always want to join the modeling field?

“Fluke” is what I would like to call my entry into the modeling field. It was Anup Prakash from Himal Media who encouraged me to do a photo shoot and I was pulled into the modeling world. But I’ve done very few ramp shows and they have been exclusive ones. I’ve walked exclusively for the event, Celebrating Womanhood.

Nepali films in your experience?

I have only acted in two Nepali films – “Lakshya” and “Flight No. 187”. Both films were different from the mainstream. Flight No 187 was entirely shot in Dubai and Lakshya was an out and out thriller. I enjoyed working in both and even received “Best Newcomer” nomination at the National Awards.

But now my full time job keeps me busy. I can’t churn out time for my filmic aspirations. My dream role however has always been to do serious characters – a mythological one perhaps. It must have essence and shouldn’t be one among the run off the mill characters.

An outrageous experience?

Not outrageous but annoying, yes. A long time ago I was walking outside my home. It was during the wee hours of the morning and I saw someone following me on a bicycle. I was petrified and hurried along. The person who claimed to be a fan wanted to hand me a gift. But since I was annoyed and frightened, I walked away. He had this nicely wrapped-up photo frame of mine. I should’ve talked to him and not acted in such a manner. But then, the situation was pretty annoying, being stopped in the streets all of a sudden.

Is there another side of Noyo?

I’m very simple at heart. And superficiality doesn’t appeal to me in any way. I judge people by how they are inside rather than what they look on the outside. I love to cook and write poetry. My favorite dishes are Japanese ones and Sushi is my favorite. I don’t have a fetish for clothes, and I love to walk around in a pair of jeans and t-shirt.

Your take on the Nepali fashion industry?

We’re still a young industry, and although international brands might be eyeing the Nepali market, we’re yet to build an identity of our own. However, there’s no need to be discouraged for modeling aspirants. Nepal holds great promises.
