Scene: Infuriated volleyball players demanding their cash prizes for the Men´s and Women´s National League Volleyball Tournament

The anger of the players was enough to show that the volleyball players had not received the cash prizes announced by NVA after the completion of the First National League Volleyball Tournament on September 16, 2009. [break]

In men´s category, Nepal Police Club (NPC) had lifted the trophy defeating APF Club 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20. The winners and runners-up were to be given Rs 80,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively, it was announced.

However, one and half months after the tournament the winners have not received any cash prize from NVA. The more frustrating thing for the players is that they have also not received the individual cash prizes announced at the prize giving ceremony.

Chuda Khadka in women´s category and Im Rana in men´s category were adjudged the best players. But shockingly, they have not received any cash prize yet. They were to be given Rs 2,000 each, it was announced.

Though the amount of the cash prize sounds little, it is an important aspect for motivating players.

In the present situation hardly any parents will motivate their children to join the sports sector since it is really a tough job securing their future in Nepali sports.

“The cash prize will be handed over to the teams and players very soon,” NVA president Ganga Bahadur Thapa told myrepublica.com. “We are unable to give away the cash prizes as the NSC has given only half of the Rs 200,000 they promised for the tournament."

“NSC was unable to provide the money promised following disruption in budget allocation due to political reasons but we will by all means provide the announced prizes by two weeks,” Thapa said.

Dietary allowance

The volleyball players undergoing training for the upcoming South Asian Games have not received dietary allowance as announced by the National Sports Council (NSC). NSC had announced Rs 100 as diet allowance for each player and from October 23 the allowance was increased to Rs 250. But the volleyball players complain that they have not received a single paisa.

“We have said to the players to train in their respective areas (for example the Eastern Region´s players are to train in that region), and to provide them a dietary allowance we need to submit the attendance register. We received the register on Tuesday and have already submitted it to the authorities concerned. The dietary allowance will be provided to the players soon,” Thapa said.
