KATHMANDU, March 5: Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav told a meeting of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Wednesday that there is no room for impunity in Nepal.
"I would like to reaffirm the Government’s commitment that there is no room for impunity in Nepal," said Yadav, while addressing the tenth session of the Council. "We are committed to strike a necessary balance between peace and justice, and provide relief to conflict victims." [break]
Protests, Power and the Price of Neglect
Giving reference of an ordinance on disappearances issued last month, Minister Yadav said justice remains an integral part of the peace process, according to a statement issued by Nepal´s mission in Geneva. "Our commitment to establish the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is a clear manifestation of our pledge to respect human rights, heal past wounds and promote national reconciliation and harmony."
Minister Yadav also appreciated the role of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) as a facilitator to the peace process for monitoring the management of arms and armed personnel and the role of OHCHR for monitoring the human rights situation in the country during the time of the conflict.
In the sidelines of the session, Minister Yadav held bilateral meetings with Swiss Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheline Calmy-Rey, and British Minister for Asia, Africa and the UN, Lord George Mark Malloch Brown.
