Gandhi has not held any talks with foreign dignitaries for some time. She did not hold talks with the visiting presidents of Vietnam and Myanmar last week and a week before that.[break]
During Dr. Bhattarai´s meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, the two discussed issues of mutual concern and the peace process in Nepal. Krishna said after the meeting that as per the "comfort level" of the political parties of Nepal, India would "use all its power" to fully help the peace process.
Likewise, after a meeting with Dr. Bhattarai, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, said that her party -- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -- fully supports the economic development of Nepal, "which is also the pre-dominant agenda of Bhattarai´s visit."
She also said that political stability is important. "For political stability, it´s important that the peace process moves forward and the constitution is drafted as soon as possible." Swaraj also added that the BJP believes Nepali leaders have the capacity to build a consensus for the peace process and constitution drafting.
Prakash Agrawal, chairman of the Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group, also called on the PM.
The PM called on President of India Prathiba Patil and Vice-president Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
Dr. Bhattarai also held a closed session with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, after which the stage was set for the signing of agreements. Earlier in the morning, the PM accompanied by his spouse went to the sacred Rajghat for laying of wreaths at the Gandhi Samadhi.
