The NIC had organized the essay competition on the theme, "Status and needs of Right to Information in Nepal," to build support for effective implementation of the Right to Information Act, 2007. Parliamentary Development Committee President Rabindra Adhikari distributed cash prizes and certificates to the winners.Among journalists, Chudamani Bhattarai won the first prize, while journalists Ghanshyam Sapkota and Rakesh Kumar Chaudhary bagged second and third prizes, respectively. The first prize carried a purse of Rs 20,000, the second Rs 15,000 and the third Rs 10,000.
Among information officers, Ramesh Aryal, Krishna Bahadur Limbu and Jiwan Kumar Rai bagged the first, second and third prizes, respectively. The NIC organized the essay competition as part of its promotional activities to increase awareness about the RTI Act, 2007, and make citizens aware about it.
Speaking on the occasion, Parliamentary Development Committee Chairman Rabindra Adhikari said RTI is the heart of a functioning democracy. He also said that any shortcomings seen in the draft constitution can be improved in the course of incorporating public feedback. Adhikari urged the NIC to seek details of the income and expenditures of political parties. He maintained that transparency and accountability cannot be expected in any other sectors if the political parties themselves fail to maintain it.
