Some Tharu intellectuals claim that the previously backward Tharus will once again have to face neglect from the nation. Balkumar Chaudhary, principal of Tikapur Multiple Campus said that the constitution won't be helping in alleviating the status of Tharu community members. "It will cut us off from national government and also weaken our political presence," said Chaudhary. "The failure of this constitution to address our need is evident. Our community will be once again marginalized," he asserted. However, major party politicians are terming the constitution as shared document that they claim has brought together aspirations of the general public and will see the dreams of many come true.
Lal Bahadur Chaudhary, Deputy Mayor of Tikapur Municipality, opined that the constitution has divided the society into two factions of supporters and protestors. "Some are feeling more included and some are feeling less included in the constitution," he said. However there are others who believe that the constitution has succeeded in addressing the issues of Tharu community. "Except for the issue of state restructuring, all other demands have been included," commented right activist Firulal Chaudhary. "This should be seen on a positive note," he asserted adding that it was entirely up to the Tharu community to welcome the constitution as their own or not.
"Political parties have given up on many of their individual demands to draft this constitution. And it is the lack of knowledge about this sacrifice made by these parties that has created this faulty concept," said UML Kalali's District Committee member Bhairav Rawal. "They think the constitution needs to address all their individual demands, which is not possible. Tharu people, like other community members, also should acknowledge the compromise done by political parties in endorsing the agreement," he said.
UCPN- Maoist leader in Kailali, Tara Prasad Sanjyal said that rather than protesting, everyone should celebrate the accomplishments. "Tharus have been guaranteed proportional representation and a separate Tharu commission. They should be positive about these accomplishments," he said.
NC Kailali's District Committee member Fakir Singh Kadayat said that party cadres are eagerly waiting for the promulgation of the new constitution. He called on Tharu community members to accept the new constitution stating that it has somewhat addressed their demands. "The political parties have tried to make it an inclusive document and issues that have been missed out can be worked upon in the days ahead," he explained.
