HONGKONG, Feb 3: It has already been a month that Nepal Tourism Year 2011 began, but officials at the Nepali embassy in Beijing said not a single tourism promotional program has been organized at the Chinese capital. They further said they have not been informed about the role of embassies in tourism promotion.

The goodwill ambassadors named by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) too do not know what to do because of the lack of budget and proper coordination with the embassy.[break]

The government aims to welcome 100,000 Chinese tourists during the year and it has allocated Rs 40 million to conduct promotional campaigns in China.

“We have heard that Rs 40 million has been allocated to conduct promotional activities in China. But I haven´t seen a single program so far,” an official at the Nepali embassy in Beijing said.

NTB has appointed goodwill ambassadors in Beijing and southern city of Kunming. But these goodwill ambassadors are not in contact with the embassy.

“We simply have received a letter with the name of two goodwill ambassadors, but we don´t have any information about them,” the official told Republica.

Similar is the case in Hong Kong, a transit point for many visitors to Nepal. Binod Kumar Upadhyay, Nepal´s consul general in Hong Kong, said promotional campaigns have not been held in Hong Kong as well.

Tourism entrepreneur and NTB´s honorary PR in Hong Kong Lincoln Lin is surprised at the lack of promotional campaigns in Hong Kong. “I am volunteering as a goodwill ambassador of Nepal for tourism promotion, but it would have been better if there were certain budget for tourism promotion,” he added.

Nepal was represented effectively at the World Expo in Shanghai last year. But no specific program on NTY campaign has been held in China.
