Koirala´s statement comes at a time when speculations are rife that he would back Dahal as prime minister after the incumbent Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal steps down as per the five-point agreement reached between major political parties before the extension of CA´s term on May 28. [break]
“I will myself propose Dahal as prime minister if the peace process concludes on time and there is a guarantee of a democratic constitution. But the present situation is quite different,” Koirala said, receiving the Reporter´s Club memorandum demanding implementation of the five-point agreement at his residence in Maharajgunj on Saturday.
He reiterated that Maoists must show seriousness toward implementing past agreements. “NC is not responsible for the current deadlock. The Maoists themselves should resolve the problems they have created,” Koirala said.
He claimed that it is in the hands of the Maoists whether or not to conclude the peace process. “The ball is in Maoists´ court and it is up to them how they perceive the issues,” Koirala added.
Koirala said NC is trying its best to end the political deadlock which is not possible without collaboration and agreement between political parties.
He asked Prime Minister Khanal to resign to pave the way for national consensus. “I don´t understand why he has not stepped down so far,” Koirala said.
Asked who would be the NC´s candidate for prime minister, Koirala said, “You will come to know about it after the prime minister resigns.”
